Mental Health Mental Retardation of Tarrant County

Program:
Screening and Crisis Services

Program Description:
Provides 24/7 crisis hotline; also screens for mental health services for those who face the challenges of mental illness, mental retardation, autism, addiction and early childhood developmental delays. Major divisions include:

  • Mental Health

  • Mental Retardation

  • Addiction Services

  • Early Childhood Intervention

There are five Mental Health Mental Retardation of Tarrant County (MHMR/TC) outpatient clinics whose major focus is to provide psychiatric mental health services to Tarrant County adults. These clinics are located in Arlington, Fort Worth, and in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford areas. Services provided include symptom management, rehabilitation therapies, service coordination, and supportive housing.

Eligibility:
To receive Mental Health Services, you must:

  • Proof of residency in Tarrant County

  • Proof of financial responsibility for services

  • Must be age 3 years or older

  • Mental health needs must meet Texas Department of Mental Health Mental Retardation mandated criteria (priority population)

  • Must meet criteria for admission to the specific program

  • Must have a diagnosis of mental retardation, autism, or pervasive developmental disorder

Other important information:
Crisis Services provides mental health emergency support 24-hours a day, 365 days a year and is the first point of contact to begin eligibility assessment by calling 817- 335-3022 or call toll free 1-800-866-2465.

Staff provide support and help connect callers to emergency services if needed including:

  • Contacting the caller's MHMR/TC psychiatrist and/or the caller's Service Coordinator for assistance;

  • Involving 911 services if the caller is dangerous to self or others;

  • Arranging an emergency assessment by Intake, Assessment, and Referral (IAR) staff if the caller is not in MHMR/TC services; or

  • Emergency assessment by licensed staff may occur at the IAR clinic or a community location depending upon the caller's needs. People who need brief treatment to help them stabilize may receive 1-4 sessions of therapy. Further need for therapy will be referred to a long-term service.

Addiction Services provides medically supervised detoxification for adults; short-term residential treatment and intensive and supportive outpatient counseling for both adults and adolescents; day treatment for adolescents; DWI Repeat Offender and anger control education classes; and HIV case management and outreach services. Addiction Services also offers specialized services for women with children, HIV positive clients, homeless individuals, and people who are dually diagnosed (both mental illness and substance abuse). If you believe you qualify for and need these services, contact the TRAC staff for assistance. TRAC staff understand eligibility requirements and have a designated liaison who can help work through difficult issues. TRAC staff can also make referrals to other appropriate service providers.
