Association for Independent Living

Program:
Transitional Living Program for young adults with a mental retardation diagnosis. 

Program Description:
Program participants initially live in a dormitory with the possibility of transitioning to on-site apartments. Participants are required to maintain employment and pay a monthly fee to receive housing and meals. 

AFIL provides training within a residential setting to allow the young adults to naturally develop the essentials of everyday living. They learn cooking, cleaning, laundering and shopping, as well as handling money and check writing. They are also taught the value of time-management and work ethics.

Eligibility:

o       Ages 18 to 30.

o       Psychiatric diagnosis of mental retardation based upon IQ of below 70.

o       Capable of maintaining employment and progressing on to independent living.

o       The parents/guardians of all applicants must live in the DFW area.

Guardianship Services, Inc.

Program:
Guardianship Program & Money Management Program

Program Description:
Serves adults who lack the ability to manage personal or financial affairs. Matches volunteers to serve as court-appointed guardians for adults who lack the capacity to make personal and business decisions and have no family members or friends to serve in that capacity. A money management program utilizes volunteers in the roles of Bill Payers and Representative Payees.

Eligibility:
Adult residents of Tarrant County or Parker County, determined incapacitated by Court or determined to need a Representative Payee by Social Security Administration.

The Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC), a Legal Services Program, is a state support office which provides specialized assistance to advocates of low-income people. The areas in which we provide assistance are training, litigation support, and communication.

Reading & Radio Resource

Program: NTRB - Radio Reading Service

Program Description:
Serves children and adults who are visually or physically disabled and/or learning differenced. Those who are certified by either a physician or social worker to be print impaired may order a special-ordered radio unit on which they may listen to programming 18/hrs. per day; 7 days/week, 365 days/year. Local and national newsletters and periodicals are read as well as serialized books and various other programming which includes exercising, cooking, travel, interviews of local people and agencies of interest, New York Times book review etc..

Eligibility:
Children and adults who are certified to be visually or physically disabled and/or learning differenced.

Other important information:
Radio units are provided free of charge to the listener with the proviso that if the radio is no longer needed, it will be returned to the agency to be re-cycled.
